A Message to Our Stakeholders

A personal message from CIFR CEO, Professor David R. Gallagher

This video presentation provides an update on CIFR’s activities to date, and where we see the future.  CIFR was established in late 2011 with significant funding committed by the Commonwealth and NSW Governments.  Our mission has been to provide a strategic link between academia, policy-makers, financial regulators and other industry participants.

What makes CIFR different from other types of Centres is that we ensure our funded research exhibit policy-relevant outputs that are international in their scope and contribute to the development of Australia’s financial and regulatory architecture.

Another area of uniqueness is that CIFR emphasises research being demand-driven, which ensures that financial policy-makers and regulators have the opportunity to identify policy and regulatory areas that could benefit from rigorous academic analysis.  It has always been our view that publicly-funded research by academics can and should be translated to a far wider group of stakeholders.

Over the course of 2016 we need to focus on completing our mission – that is, to harvest the research we have already commissioned thus far.  Completing our mission successfully is the best way of building a case for further funding support.  And that’s why our partnership with CIFR-funded researchers is critically important.  I’m confident that CIFR has already shown promise of what is possible beyond 2016, but at the end of the day we must complete our mission, and demonstrate genuine value for stakeholders.

I look forward to communicating further news as CIFR moves towards the achievement of these objectives.

Professor David R. Gallagher
